This padded felt keyring is in the shape of Monte, a Tyrolean mountain dog who belonged to the RNLI’s most decorated lifeboatman and lifesaving legend Henry Blogg.
Henry named his beloved dog after the Italian ship Monte Nevoso, which ran aground on Haisborough Sands in 1932. Cromer Coxswain Henry and his crew launched with several tugs to refloat the ship, but after several hours, it began to break up.
The ship’s crew were taken off, but its officers refused to leave. After Henry and his crew determinedly returned to the ship twice for the captain and his officers, they found the ship abandoned except for a Tyrolean mountain dog and caged birds, which they rescued.
By the time they arrived home, the Cromer lifeboat crew had been at sea for 52 hours. Henry was awarded an RNLI Silver Medal for Gallantry for his part in the rescue and was praised for his faultless seamanship, great courage and endurance. As a show of thanks, Henry was also gifted the rescued dog Monte - who became his faithful companion. And now Monte can be yours!
